Angles in Art Lesson

Grade Level: 5-9 Content Area: Math & Art
Students will use the Angles program on their handheld. They will use the angles from the Angles program to create a non-objective artwork. Students will look at images by famous artists and discover that artists use angles in art.

Lesson Goals

    • ExampleStudents will discover that artists use angles to create art.
    • Students will learn the correlation between art and math.
    • Students will be active learners when measuring angles in artworks.
    • Students will engage in the Angles program on their Palm and use the information to create an artwork.
    • Students will learn about various color schemes before creating their art.
    • Students will use the color schemes learned, angles found, and creativity to produce an artwork.
    • ExampleStudents will share their artworks and go an angle hunt in each other’s artworks.

    Curriculum Standards (Grade 5 – Millard Public Schools)

    • Art: Create an abstract artwork, attempting to combine colors and other elements harmoniously.
    • Math: Identifies properties of angles and polygons
    • Math: Constructs and measure angles and polygons using compass, protractor, straight-edge.
    • Math: Measures and draws acute, obtuse and right angles to nearest given degree

Other Materials

  • 12 x18 paper various colors, pencils, felt-tip black markers, crayons, colored pencils, oil pastels, markers of various colors, protractors, Angles in Art worksheet

Optional Resources

  • Art prints by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Wassily Kandinsky
    Procedures
    1. Display angles in art PowerPoint slide show.
      1. If computer is unavailable use art prints in your school that have angles in them.
    2. Have students come up and find angles.
    3. Demonstrate how to play the Angles Palm OS program.
    4. Play Angles on the handheld.
    5. Record the angles on their Angles in Art worksheet
    6. Demonstrate how to complete the second page of the worksheet.
    7. Have students complete the backside of the worksheet.
    8. Demonstrate how to use the materials listed on the worksheet to create an artwork.
    9. Show examples, but tell students they have to come up with an original idea.
    10. Students will use a variety of materials to create their artwork using the angles recorded on the worksheet.
    11. While the students are working on their art, read When Pigasso Met Mootisse and/or Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists: Pablo Picasso.
    12. After all students have finished their artwork, have students exchange artworks and hunt for angles in each other’s artwork.
    13. Present artworks to the class and give compliments.
