Students
will learn about and work with decimals to the thousandths
using their handhelds. They will read a web page,
show they knowledge in an animation and finally test
their knowledge in a game.
|
Lesson Goals
-
Students
will learn what decimals are.
-
Students
will learn that decimals have place values just like whole
numbers.
-
Students
will compare decimals based on their place value.
-
Students
will complete an animation and game to apply their knowledge.
Procedures
- Install
FlingIt on student handhelds. Fling each student the web
site: http://www.tpub.com/math1/6.htm
- Have students
read the site information on their own or in groups.
- Have a
short discussion about what they learned from the web site,
or what they already knew before reading.
- Students
will have discovered or relearned that decimals have place
values. Lead a discussion of why place values of decimals
might be important. Bring up sports and the fact that sometimes
the winner of a game only wins by a few tenths of a second.
- Have the
class list the ways that we use decimals and why they might
be important.
- From this
list, students chose a way that we use decimals or why they
might be important and put it in an animation using Sketchy.
- Students
will share these with the class.
- Beam students
Bubble Blasters.
- Show them
that we are comparing decimals, and discuss that in seeing
which number is bigger when using decimals, it's good to
think in terms of pizza or money.
- Students
need to keep playing until they hyave reached 93% accuracy.
