Lesson Goals

    • The students will be able to recognize the characteristics of a fairy tale. (http://www.courses.psu.edu/ger/ger100_fgg1/transparencies/fairytales.html)
    • The students will be able to create a story line using Picomap.
    • The students will be able to rewrite an existing fairy tale to fit present times using the characteristics of the fairy tale.
    • The students will be able to retell a story.
    • The students will be able to do a telling of their own story using Sketchy as a storyboard.

    Procedures

    1. The class will discuss fairy tales. As they discuss the fairy tales they already know, they will discuss some of the similarities and differences.
    2. The class will beam the fairy tale ebooks around. The students will be paired up. In the pairs the students will each read two different stories. After both students have read both stories they will compare and contrast the stories.
    3. After the compare and contrast the pair will choose one of the two stories to revise. They will use PiCoMap to make a story line of the tale they have chosen.
    4. They will then work together to brainstorm ideas to update the story. They can story board these ideas into sketchy.
    5. The students will use a word processing program such as WordSmith or Word-To-Go to write their story.
    6. Once the story is written, the student pairs will be teamed up and do peer editing of one other pair’s story. To do this the pairs will exchange stories by beaming. They will read each other’s story and be allowed time to ask questions for clarification. Then offer any suggestions they may have.
    7. At the conclusion of the peer editing session the students will once again work with their partner and decide which suggestions they would like to accept, and do their final editing.
    8. At the conclusion of the final editing the students will rehearse their stories using their sketchy storyboard.
    9. There will be a two-part conclusion for this lesson. In part one, the students will do a telling of their story for the class. In part two the teacher will compile all of the stories into an eBook for the students to enjoy.
