Students
will use the handheld to explore how light and color
are related. The use of the handheld allows the students
to create wider ranges of color.

Other Required Materials
- Red, green,
and blue colored cellophane
- Rubber
bands
- Flashlights
- Artist
colorwheel
Lesson
Goals
- Students
will be able to predict what new colors will be created by
combining red, green and blue light.
Procedures
- NineColours
should be preloaded on all handhelds.
- Palm4kids
should be preloaded on all handhelds.
- Individually
have students explore NineColours.
- After
initial explorations, be sure to model to the students how
to slide the red, green, and blue color slides across to
blend these colors together.
- Be sure
they realize that one, two, or all three of these colors
can be mixed.
- Pass out
the prepared worksheet.
- Have the
students blend the color boxes in NineColours to answer each
of the questions.
- While
walking the room the teacher can use this worksheet to determine
if students are able to correctly identify how to create
blended colors.
- Upon completion
of the worksheet, have the students create a slideshow in
Palm4Kids that demonstrates what colors are achieved by mixing
each color. Encourage the students to use different hues
of colors to explore how these are blended.
- Share
slideshows with the class.
Extensions:
- Pass out
three flashlights to small groups of three or four. Have
students rubber band a piece of red, blue, and green, cellophane
to one of the flashlights. Use these colored flashlights
to create colored light. Focus one, two or all three of these
lights together to create lighting effects.
- Show the
students a copy of an artist’s color wheel. Have them
create their own artist’s wheel in Palm4Kids. Discuss
how each color is related.
- Talk over
how to achieve different hues of colors.
- Contact
the local opera or theatrical light crew. Arrange a class
visit and demonstration of how they light a stage.
