Meet the Instruments of the Orchestra

Students read a short description of the four families of instruments and characteristics of each family. Students use Concept Mapping to unscramble instruments of the orchestra and arrange them into families. Students also take a quiz over various instruments. This activity is designed to be used at a music center as review and practice.

    • Students will identify brass, woodwind, string, and percussion instruments and group them into appropriate families.
    Procedures
    1. PiCoMap ExampleAfter learning about instruments of the orchestra students will work individually in a music center to practice matching instruments with the correct family.
    2. The students will read an eBook to review the different instruments and families.
    3. The students will work using PiCoMap to unscramble instruments and place them in the correct families. The teacher will need to prepare this ahead of time and beam to students.
    4. They will take a quiz to assess their ability to correctly match instruments with families.The teacher will need to prepare this ahead of time and beam to students
    5. Students may then access the San Francisco Symphony Website for kids to further explore the instruments of the orchestra.
