Students review letter names of notes and their placement on a piano keyboard. They play short melodies, using correct rhythms.

Lesson Goals

    • Students will correctly identify letter names of notes, demonstrate understanding of simple rhythms, and combine the two to play short melodic phrases.
    Procedures
    1. Review names of lines and spaces in the treble clef.
    2. Using Inspiration, display the connection between notes on a staff and their connection to duration of notes (specific rhythm patterns). Click here to see an example.
    3. Keyboard handout - go over note names and their arrangement on the piano keyboard.
    4. Melodies Handout - Students will correctly identify letter names of notes.
    5. Using Bug Band, students will practice and learn the sample melodies. Students will select one melody to play; instructor will select second melody.
    6. Students will pass Level 2 of BugBand note identification.
    7. Students will answer questions in Quizzler regarding the melodic and rhythmic information included in the lesson.
    8. In succeeding lessons, students will create their own melodies and play them, first using BugBand, and then transferring to xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, or piano.
