Lesson Goals

    • Students will identify a variety of appropriate resources.
    • Students will list examples of ways to use the atlas, almanac, dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, online search engines for the Internet, and the online library card catalog.
    • Students will demonstrate their understanding by completing the Reference Resources Quizzler.

Other Materials

  • Microsoft PowerPoint
    Procedures
    1. Explain that the Internet is an awesome source for information, but that students need to be aware of other resources.
    2. Ask students if anyone know what the word tenacious means. It’s a really hard word…probably one that someone in high school might use. Does anybody know where we can find out the meaning? Dictionary- Don’t tell the meaning.
    3. Display Reference Resources PowerPoint-Slide 2- Review keyword & how students need to work hard…and be tenacious which means not giving up!
    4. Present PowerPoint to large group-review of the different references.
    5. Beam the References eBook and have them review the examples.
    6. Divide the class into seven groups and display the group papers (Encyclopedia Group, Dictionary Group, etc.) Each group will be given 90 seconds to write one type of information they could find in the resource. They cannot repeat what another group has written. Alternative: Just put a large piece of construction paper with an actual resource on each table for responses.
    7. Have a quick discussion after the rotations are completed.
    8. Students take the Reference Resource Quizzler. They may take this individually or with a partner. They are welcome to refer to their Reference Resources eBook.
