Tropical Ecosystems

Grade Level: 4 Content Area: Science
Students will read about two tropical ecosystems: the rain forest and the coral reef. The text, written by Mrs. Portera and created with Palm eBook Studio, will be read on Palm Reader. The students will complete a study guide as part of their reading experience. Students will create a Sketchy or PiCoMap as directed. Finally, students will take a test with the use of Quizzler.

Lesson Goals

    • Students will understand the similarities and differences between a tropical rain forest and a coral reef
    • Students will describe the resources that are part of each system
    • Students will explain the importance of the resources of tropical areas

    Procedures

    1. Day 1: Students will read Tropical Ecosystems in Palm Reader as written by Mrs. Portera on Palm eBook Studio. During their reading of the text, students will use the Tropical Ecosystem Study Guide (answer sheet provided).
    2. Day 2: Following the completion of the Study Guide, students will select a Handheld Option which includes the choice of creating a PiCoMap of the rain forest or coral reef with criteria listed or creating a Sketchy or Palm4Kids presentation using criteria listed for the rain forest or coral reef.
    3. Day 3: Students will share Handheld Options with each other and the teacher. Students will finally be beamed a Quizzler quiz over the information on rain forests and coral reefs.
