In
this lesson, students work together to find the latitude
and longitude of various locations. Students also
use latitude and longitude to help them figure out
the distance between two given coordinate points.

Lesson Goals
- Students
will learn the meaning of terms latitude and longitude.
- Students
will be able find the latitude and longitude of various locations.
- Students
will figure the distance between two locations by using latitude
and longitude.
- Students
will practice rounding numbers to the nearest hundredth.
Procedures
- Beam students
eBook “Latitude and Longitude” to learn about
meaning of each term.
- As class,
discuss the terms and what students learned from the eBook
about latitude and longitude.
- Beam students
City Zen.
- Let student
experiment with City Zen, then proceed to explain the various
functions that can be found in City Zen.
- Pair students
and hand out “Where Am I?” worksheet.
- Students
work in pairs to complete the first two sections of the “Where
Am I?” worksheet.
- When first
two section are completed, teacher checks those sections
to check for understanding of latitude and longitude measurements.
- After
assessing understanding, teacher beams student pairs Distance.
(Distance is an easy-to-understand application. Most students
shouldn’t need direct instruction in using it.)
- Students
complete the third section of the worksheet using Distance.
