AnagramAble
Students can explore anagrams. Requires two files to be installed to the Palm.
BooksLog
Students record information about books they read, including a rating 1-5 and a short review. Records can be beamed to others. BooksLog is a great tool to have students take to the library when checking out a book because they can have reviews from their classmates.
BookShare
BookShare allows groups of people to collaboratively create and edit shared documents called Books. A book has a bunch of pages like memos. Two people can synchronize their books by beaming.
CopyWrite
Students can copy a teacher's handwriting example on the Palm. I have used this with only one student who needed to improve his handwriting. I would not recommend it for an entire fifth grade class. Requires several files to be installed on the Palm. Shareware, free to try.
Dictate
Teachers easily create and give dictation. Students take dictation on their handhelds and receive instant feedback. This can even be used with sentences, phrases, or just spelling words! Download the User Guide.
eBooks
There are many free eBooks out there for eReader. Go to learninginhand's eBook section.
FitalyLetris
FitalyLetris is both a word game and a training tool for fast text-entry. It can be used to practice Graffiti or to test keyboarding words per minute. You would even type in the text you want students to practice.
Gone Mad!
Read some and create some fill-in-the-blank stories (like Mad Libs). Go to learninginhand's Gone Mad! section.
Grammar Grames: Constructor
Students answer questions about sentences to earn puzzle pieces.
Hungman
Students can play hangman with either the supplied word lists or they can make their own. You'll need to install the Hungload application to change a list of words in MemoPad to a file that Hungman can use. This application requires Pocket C to be installed to the Palm.
Kid Paint Alphabet Coloring Book
Coloring book for each letter of the alphabet. Use the paint bucket tool to fill in the picture.
MatchWho
This application allows students to select facial features and hair to create a person. I like to use this for students to make a visual representation of characters in our read aloud book or characters in their own books.
SAT Hangman
Full of great vocabulary words with definitions! It helps students prepare for SATs, but it also can challenge fifth graders! There are two files to install: prc and pdb files.
Silly Sentences
Enter lists of adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. The words are randomly combined to make outrageous sentences! Color coding helps students identify the parts of speech.
Sorting Hat
This is a Sorting Hat, as described in Harry Potter, book 1 pages 113-123. The Sorting Hat looks deep inside you, selects a House for you to live in while at Hogwarts, and tells you about your parents.
SpellIT
Enter weekly spelling lists and then practice the words.
Thesaurus
Free thesaurus with 48,000 words. Warning: offensive words are included.
What-If Builder
The What-If Builder is a tool that enables students to create decision-tree models, also known as "Action Mazes," "tree literature," "plot branching" or "choose your own adventure.
Words Per Minute
Test typing or graffiti speed. You can change the sentence students type.
Wordz
Tool for finding words when you have some of the letters, for example when solving a crossword. You enter a pattern, such as "hand----", and get a list of words which match this. Wordz works great for a student spelling dictionary. You can also search for anagrams. Requires a prc and a pdb file to be installed. Uses 604k of memory.
