Upcoming Michigan Conference
Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at 5:24PM
The yearly Michigan Handheld Computers in Education Conference will be held November 4, 2005 in Holland, Michigan. It's hard to believe, but this is the fifth time for this conference from the Ottawa Area ISD!
I have the pleasure of presenting the opening keynote:
From Creative to CrazyMany terrific presenters from around the country and I will share our wisdom about handheld computing in the breakout sessions. Check out the PDF of the sessions being offered. The trip to Holland, Michigan will be well worth your time. It's one of the biggest and best educational handheld computing conferences around! Click here to register. It's only $50 and includes the opening keynote, four sixty-minute breakout sessions, and most importantly...lunch!
Innovative teachers and students from across the country are using handheld computers in creative, cool, and even crazy ways. Tony Vincent shares experiences, activities, and software that will leave no doubt that handhelds are small computers that can be used in so many different ways. Get a glimpse of the educational possibilities when students have access to handheld computing!
Watch a five-minute QuickTime video with post conference interviews from last year's conference to see the enthusiasm of those who attended. (Yes, that's me being interviewed at the end of an exhausting day.)
* There are Preconference Workshops on November 3. More information and registration for these will be available September 20. Elliot Soloway from GoKnow will be the luncheon keynoter!

Well, I'm only two hours away so I plan to attend this conference.
Unfortunately, Most K-12 schools in my area, Genesee County, seem fairly content with a half hour of computer lab twice a week so my opportunities to see students using technology in depth are rather limited.

What I hope to do is maximize my exposure to technology through research, finding sites like this one, and keeping a eye out for nearby confrences and workshops.
I don't intend to move so I may find myself in a technology backwards situation when I begin my teaching career in a couple of years.
I guess that leads to the question of what a technology inclined new teacher should plan for in the event he finds himself in the above situation.
Interactive teacher website? Podcasting? A plan to shape the situation?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Dale,
It sounds like you are doing what you can do in your current "technology backwards" environment. Luckily there is the Internet, blogs, podcasts, and email that can connect you to other teachers. It's amazing the connections I have made with others through the Web. It's really made me a much better teacher!
Anyhow, I'm glad you plan to be at the conference! I'm excited to meet you!
