Ranking of Favorite iPod touch/iPhone Apps

Google ModeratoriPod touch and iPhone Apps in Education is a Google Moderator series where educators are encouraged to vote on suggestions for educational apps and to submit their own suggestions. The apps suggestions are ranked so when you visit the list, the apps that netted the most votes are listed first.

With over 15,000 apps currently in the App Store, there are lots for teachers to sort through. Perhaps this list can help us find apps that would otherwise be lumped in with the hundreds of apps in the Education category of the App Store.

When submitting, please list the name of the app, a short description of how it could be used in education, and the price (if it isn't free). In order to vote or submit, you'll need to sign-in with your Google account information (or sign up for a free account). Unfortunately Google Moderator doesn't allow for linking to the apps. So, if you read about an app you might want to download, search for it in the App Store.

Thanks for setting this up Tony. I hope other educators start to add their favorites. The list will be very useful to those of us, who like you, are training teachers about this powerful tool. I do have some concern over vendors posting their apps on the forum...I would much rather hear from educators who have used an app rather than from someone who created one. I did flag the "Flash Tables" comment for that reason. What are your thoughts on vendor posts?

I'm hoping that Google Moderator works itself out. I think there are developers who create apps that they really believe in. If the apps they add to the series aren't helpful for teaching and learning, then they will be voted down. Conversely, they might be really great and get voted up. So, I hope people check the series periodically and vote.

I'm struggling with how to sort out apps and present them to teachers. For Palm and Pocket PC, I kept organized lists. But iPod touch apps are coming out so quickly, that I don't think I can manage that kind of list. That's why I hope our Google Moderator series will be useful.

I understand what you're saying about so many new apps. I was asked today to suggest some "knock your socks off" apps for high school teachers. It took me about two hours to come up with a list I was happy with and, as I did my research I found numerous apps I found myself interested in exploring and couldn't find some that I had previously thought were pretty cool. I took the flag off the post from Flash Tables and we'll see what happens! (I did purchase the app to check it out with my first grade nephew and will vote later if it does what it promises.)

I'm dying to know, what "knock your socks off" apps did you suggest?

Not sure if they'll knock YOUR socks off (or anyone else's for that matter...) but I'll post the ones I liked--that haven't already been posted--to the Google Moderator website in the very near future. Thanks again for all you do!

Thanks! I'm a mom in KY with a son going into the fourth grade. He has Asperger's and we've been wondering about an ITouch for him to help with schedules, and the writing workload he's going to face this year. He's always been a visual, hands on learner, learning better from games than from lectures. I use my Iphone like mad for scheduling and task management...and can't wait to go check out all the apps that might help him! Thanks!
